The Dark Sky initiative started with a citizen making the suggestion that Lago become a Dark Sky Community. With help from council member Ron Smith & Development Director Roy Jambor the idea was presented to the Building & Standards committee in 2017. Also in 2017, the Dark Sky plan was incorporated into the Comprehensive Master Plan by popular vote. In 2018 the first ordinances were passed.
Three years after the first Dark Sky ordinances came into affect no movement had been made to finish the application for recognition. It was suggested that a volunteer committee be formed to complete the application on behlf of the city. That suggestion was eagerly embraced by the mayor and city council In 2021 Lago Vista Starry Skies was formed.

We worked for two years to meet the International Dark-Sky Association (now Dark Sky International) requirements. This included adding city ordinances, a city lighting assessment, speaking engagements, education outreach, public activities and sky brightness measurements.
In March 2023 the first draft of the application was sent to IDA, no answer yet. We have some dedicated people who have been working on this but there is much more to be done. It will take our business owners, residents, schools and private organizations working together the keep the stars over Lago Vista.
